Our Difference

Why Marley's Magic Works

Unlike traditional SEL workbooks, Marley's Magic teaches empathy through immersive storytelling and repeatable adult-child conversation.

Story-Based Learning

Picture-book storytelling gives children a safe way to identify with characters, feelings, and choices. They learn empathy by stepping inside the story.

The Patchwork Approach™

A research-informed framework built on a simple belief: empathy can be taught and strengthened over time through modeling, reflection, and practice.

Home & Classroom Ready

Designed for ages 3–7 and built for both bedtime and circle time, with language parents and educators can use together.

Beyond the Last Page

Every experience includes conversation support, including author-guided prompts, so empathy lessons carry into real life.

Research-informed by child empathy and story-learning studies, including Wagers & Kiel (2019), Boele et al. (2019), and Pulimeno et al. (2020).

"Empathy is more than a fleeting feeling — it's learned, felt, and stitched together through story. One patch at a time."— The Patchwork Approach™ by Marley's Magic

Meet the Marley Plushie — Early Preview

An early concept for a soft feelings companion with Velcro patches and a storage pocket so children can touch, sort, and talk through emotions beyond the page.

The Moment

The World Needs This Now

Early childhood is a defining window for social-emotional growth. Marley's Magic exists to give adults a practical, story-first way to build empathy while those pathways are still forming.

  • Empathy can be taught and strengthened, and ages 3–7 are a powerful time to build it
  • Children learn to see through someone else's eyes through modeled relationships and guided conversation
  • Parents and teachers need screen-light tools that children can revisit often
  • There is still a gap in accessible, imaginative empathy tools for early childhood

Marley — Your Feelings Friend

More than a plushie, Marley is planned as an interactive feelings companion. This early preview reflects the direction: Velcro emotion patches children can remove, name, and store while learning to express feelings.

Framework

The Patchwork Approach™

Empathy doesn't arrive all at once. It's stitched together patch by patch through storytelling, reflection, modeling, and conversation. This research-informed framework guides every Marley product.

Marley's Magic started with one simple belief: empathy grows through the moments we share — a story read together, a feeling named out loud, or a caring choice made one patch at a time.

Empathy Patch: Snap & Share Challenge

Make one empathy patch, snap a photo, and submit to join the upcoming Marley Community Gallery queue.

Together, shared patches can show children they are not alone in big feelings and that caring actions connect communities.

Child makes one patch that shows a feeling and one caring action.

Example SubmissionPhoto + 2 Lines

Upload one photo plus two short lines like this.

Why feeling + action? Feeling names what happened inside; action shows how the child chose to care.

About Marley's Magic

Bentley Honors Capstone Project

Marley's Magic is a story-based empathy education platform for ages 3 to 7. Through storytelling and the visual language of the Patchwork Approach™, emotional growth becomes something children can see, feel, and practice.

Our framework is research-informed and simple: empathy is not fixed. It can be taught and strengthened. Children build it through relationships, observation, guided conversation, and repeated emotional experiences with trusted adults.

Every Marley experience is built to support both the child and the adult reading beside them, with practical language and discussion prompts that carry empathy lessons beyond storytime and into daily life.

This section reflects Kristina's research and creative intent: empathy is teachable, early childhood is a critical window, and story can turn abstract values into lived practice.

I'm Kristina Esserian, and I created Marley's Magic to help children feel empathy, not just hear about it. My work sits at the intersection of research, storytelling, and mentorship.

At Bentley, I studied Management with an entrepreneurial concentration while mentoring peers at the Writing Center. Outside the classroom, I worked with children through service-learning, middle-school camp counseling, and varsity girls basketball coaching. Across every setting, I saw the same need: children need practical, age-appropriate ways to name feelings and connect with others.

Marley's Magic Overalls was designed as a tangible empathy tool for ages 3–7. The story, plush companion, and guided prompts work together to build emotional vocabulary, "walk in someone else's shoes" thinking, and parent-child conversation in everyday moments.

The Author's Note at the end of the book is intentional: it extends the lesson with conversation starters adults can use immediately. My goal is simple: make empathy education accessible, meaningful, and repeatable at home and in classrooms.

"Empathy is not a one-time lesson. It's a practice children build through story, relationship, and everyday moments of reflection."
